In the modern world, it seems hard to avoid the vampire theme, from movies to TV series it’s had a major resurgence in recent years. Most people remember that Dracula was the first superstar of this mythological genre but few perhaps remember the original Universal Studios film. Part of the ‘Universal Monsters’ series which featured Frankenstein, The Mummy and another film that became a NetEnt slot – The Creature from the Black Lagoon. NetEnt returned to Universal for a follow-on to their popular Blood Suckers slot and thus, we have the fabulous new Dracula slot.

The Dracula slot is available with no-download as either a desktop browser game or playable via mobile on the NetEnt touch platform. We prefer the full browser version as you get the full effect of the character led story-line and animations but, it still plays very well indeed as a slot on your phone or tablet. It has some bite too, with a medium variance level and a free spins bonus game which features stacked wilds. Read our full review of the NetEnt Dracula slot and see if the ancient vampire has stood the test of time, or is now past his best.

Dracula Netent The first thing you will note about the Dracula slot is the scale of it. With a large 5×4 reel grid and 40 fixed pay-lines, this is another good reason to be playing the full screen rather than the mobile version, though in terms of gameplay and mechanics – they are both essentially the same. Entry level stake for all 40 lines is 0.40 credits thanks to the fixed structure. This is higher than many of the slots in the NetEnt slot range but does accommodate all but the lowest stakes players. The max bet is an awe-inspiring 200 credits and thus, the Dracula slot might not be for the faint of heart.

This is quite a graphics intensive game so it’s a good thing that NetEnt allow adjustment of the visual quality through three different settings. This ensures the game remains perfectly playable even on older devices or when in an area with less than perfect internet connection. Likewise, you can adjust music and sound effects separately and the auto spin feature is fully customisable. With such options available it becomes possible to diligently control bankroll management by setting a fixed number of spins or setting the game to play till the free spins feature trigger – a common veteran slot players strategy.

NetEnt have a good history with both character driven and branded slots. The Dracula slot is a combination of both and it doesn’t disappoint in that respect. The imagery is more CGI cartoon than photo realistic, from the brooding figure of Dracula himself to the haughty image of Mina Harker but it’s brilliantly drawn. Dracula sits alongside the reels throughout gameplay and there are a number of neat little animations to go along with wins and full cut scenes for big prizes. By far the best animation belongs to the random bat feature. Here the old blood sucker erupts into a fiery swarm of bats and lands on the reel in a series of grouped symbols. This can sometimes offer large prizes but, with a high hit ratio on this game three of a kind combinations are far more common.

The larger than usual hit ratio also affects the average win in the base game and, brings down the top prize awards. The romantically linked duo at the top of the pay-table for instance only offer 200 coins for a full symbol set. This means that unless the extra row on the reel set is kind enough to offer multiple combinations or you strike it lucky with the bats, small and frequent wins will be the order of the day. You do get a little help from the fixed wild symbol but, truth be told, whilst everything else comes in frequently – the wild rarely seems to.

Netent
We can’t recall the last time we played a NetEnt slot with a free spins game as hard to trigger as the one on the Dracula slot. It frequently appears to take 200-300 spins to get onto the bonus game which in our opinion is far too many. Added to that, wins of around 50-60x the total stake seems to be the norm, which simply isn’t enough for such a rare feature. You only get 10 initial spins on the feature though you can trigger two more at any time you are lucky enough to land the stacked wild in the middle reel. The bat feature is also guaranteed to trigger on each and every spin so from time to time, you can hit in a memorable fashion. One thing the free spins feature definitely does have going for it is entertainment with a whole new set of animations in play. The big intro and outro sequence alone make it worth waiting for.

For entertainment value and execution of the theme the Dracula slot will win many plaudits. For win potential, though, we are on the fence. The hit ratio is a little too high in the base game and far too low for the feature trigger. This combines to form a recipe that just doesn’t work that well as a slot to play for real money. As a free game, it works very well and against other slots in the genre there simply isn’t one that looks, or sounds this good.
